rock salt deposits

About Salt Mine

In the 13th century, during the construction of the monumental Westminster Abbey in London and the expansion of the Tower of London, a groundbreaking discovery occurred in Poland – rock salt deposits were found. This discovery, known as the “white gold” of the Middle Ages, played a crucial role in the region’s economy, contributing up to one-third of the state’s income. To this day, at Polish weddings, newlyweds are traditionally welcomed with bread and salt, symbolizing happiness, wealth, and abundance.

The inscription of the Salt Mine on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 officially recognized its uniqueness and global value. Underground corridors, spectacular chambers, picturesque lakes, salt sculptures, natural stalactites, and chandeliers made of salt are just some of the attractions that captivate visitors, leaving them in awe.

Today, one of the world’s most famous salt mines attracts over 1.5 million tourists annually, including many celebrities and heads of state, making it an elite destination and truly unique on a global scale. Apart from its extraordinary interiors, the Salt Mine also boasts a unique microclimate, attracting various types of events. From exclusive business meetings to anniversaries or state meetings, and above all, romantic ceremonies and receptions – this place offers unforgettable experiences that delight both newlyweds and their families and friends.

The Guinness Book of Records

01

Subterranean Balloon Flight

The idea of a balloon flight underground may sound like a fairy tale, but thanks to the determination of Mirek Rękas, a paraglider and balloon pilot, along with other members of the Tarnowski Aviation Association, this dream became a reality. After nearly two years of preparation, including obtaining necessary documentation and expert opinions, the Stanislaw Staszic Chamber, the tallest along the tourist route, was chosen for this remarkable feat. With a height of up to 36 meters, the chamber provided an ideal location. The 14-meter diameter balloon was filled with cold air initially, then electric blowers raised the temperature inside to 65°C. The pilot successfully elevated the balloon to a significant height of… 213 centimeters, maintaining this altitude for a remarkable four minutes.

02

Bungee Jump!

Ever considered a bungee jump underground? Bogdan Kopka, founder of an extreme sports center, did just that. While bungee jumping is common from skyscrapers and bridges, Kopka wondered, “So why not give it a go underground?” Witnesses of this daring feat watched as an adventurer took a headfirst plunge from a height of 36 meters in the underground chambers of Stanislaw Staszic, offering a breathtaking view.

03

Underground Windsurfing!

“I dreamt of sailing where no one has sailed before,” declared Mateusz Kusznierewicz, multiple world and European champion in the Finn class. Polish TV Channel 2 “My First Time” crew caught wind of this declaration and promptly embarked on a quest for such a location. They found it underground, in the picturesque “Wieliczka” Salt Mine. Kusznierewicz sailed on a windsurfing board, on the surface of a salt lake… situated 104 meters below ground and 9 meters deep.

More than the Eiffel Tower

The mine encompasses nine levels and extends 327 meters underground. To put it into perspective, the Eiffel Tower would just about fit into the mine, with three meters still to spare.

The temperature and microclimate

The temperature underground ranges between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius (60.8 – 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit), providing an ideal environment for dancing and revelry. Additionally, the mine maintains a favorable microclimate for the upper respiratory system.

What does the salt mine have in common with the Pyramid of Cheops?

Almost 7.5 million cubic meters of deposit were excavated from within the mine during its history. This volume of soil could construct as many as three pyramids similar in size to the Pyramid of Cheops!
